Raise Your Self-Esteem in 0 Minutes per Day
Yes, you read that correctly! 0 minutes per day! Zero!
Unless a miracle happens I don’t think it’s possible to suddenly change from low to high self-esteem overnight. Building up your self-esteem is about adopting a new way of thinking about yourself. The way you think about yourself right now is the result of all the thoughts and experiences that you’ve had throughout your whole life up to this point. Needless to say, adopting a new way of thinking about yourself can therefore not be done instantly.
But who said that building up a new self-esteem has to steal time from all the other things that you want to spend your time on? You can keep doing exactly the same activities as you do today and still continually work on your self-esteem.
I will share a few tools that you can use to raise your self-esteem while you’re sleeping, driving, exercising, cooking etc. All that is needed is a little preparation.
1. Make a self-esteem playlist. Collect all your favourite songs into one playlist and put it on your ipod/mp3-player/CD or similar. Search for songs with positive lyrics. Select songs that tell you that you are a wonderful person, you are unique, you are beautiful, you are strong and competent etc. Dismiss all your sad love songs that you listen to when you feel lonely or sad. If you want to you can also include songs without singing as long as the rhythm cheers you up and makes you feel great about yourself. Once your playlist is ready, listen to it as often as you can: when you’re out walking, on your way to work, when you get yourself ready in the morning … You don’t have to be standing motionless next to the music player while you’re listening. You can continue doing whatever you were planning to do anyway.
2. Record affirmations. Affirmations are the new positive thought that you want to be thinking about yourself. Write down a list of all the new thoughts that you want to fill your head with and then read them out load while you’re recording your voice. You can then listen to these affirmations whenever you like. You don’t even have to be awake while you’re listening! Turn on the affirmation recording as you’re about to fall asleep and listen to it all night all (or until the end of the recording). Even if you think you’re asleep, you’re brain will still be awake to notice the messages that it hears. By brainwashing yourself in this way you will eventually start to believe in the affirmations and they will become part of your natural way of thinking about yourself.
3. Act as if you already have high self-esteem. Let’s say that your plans for the next hour is to first go shopping at the supermarket and then pick your kids up from school. Ask yourself, in what manner would you do these things if you already had really high self-esteem? Maybe you would walk with a very straight confident posture, look people in the eyes when you speak to them, speak loudly and clearly etc. Now, for the next hour decide to do a little theatrical exercise and act in this high self-esteem manner. You’re not wasting any time because you are still doing the same things as you were planning to do anyway. You’re simply practicing being the new You that you want to become. Your brain will not know the difference between pretending and acting naturally, and it will believe that you have already a high self-esteem.
